But were they truly victims? If they made a deal, knowing fully what they were trading for a wish--but then again, could a person ever truly know the consequences of giving away their heart?

About This Quote

A character in the short story, "The Heart of Desire," tells a tale about a man who kidnaps a woman. He forces her to make a wish. Several years later, he meets her on the street. Surprised to see her after so many years, he asks if she remembers the wish she had made.

She replies that she does not remember what she wished for. But, on her way home from work one day, she accidentally smashes her car window, forcing the man to bring the broken glass into his house. The next day he finds that the woman has moved into his house.

When she began living there she had no memory of the wish that cost them both so dearly.
